The lessons I Learnt From Doing A Juice Cleanse

I have just finished my 3 day juice cleanse with Juci Wellbeing. The cleanse came at a great time for me as I really wanted to have a reset before the Christmas festivities began. That being said I did find it difficult due to the cold winter weather so a lot of herbal teas were involved in the process.

For me a cleanse allows me to be become more mindful of my eating habits and allows me to work through some of my emotions without resorting to food to comfort me. So I finished the cleanse with a clearer mind, more focus, a greater appreciation for my body and a better understanding of my cravings.

What I learnt from doing the cleanse:

Cleansing is a great way to confront your emotional eating and become aware of your habits
As food is off the table you have to deal with some of the emotions that you are feeling and not resort to food for comfort. We often think emotions are too painful that we need that instant quick fix to make us feel better which only makes the problem much worse. You need to be able to notice your emotion and start asking questions. Be curious. What are you truly hungry for in that situation? This will bring you back into your body and allow for the emotion to pass through and be released. Un expressed emotion comes out as unwanted habits such as poor eating habits, excess weight, poor digestion. The list goes on. So learn to feel your feelings, don’t feed them.

Cleansing gives you a reason to slow down
We live in such a fast paced world and sometimes it is so hard to slow down and catch our breath. Due to the cleanse I was really able to pull back and get more in tune with my body. When our bodies are in a stressed state optimal digestion and assimilation cannot occur, cortisol and insulin increases which leads to fat storage and a decrease in metabolism. Stress physiology is such a powerful thing. When we relax it enables the body to function at its best. So the cleanse gave me the nudge I needed to really see where I can bring some stillness into my day. Where can you bring a bit of stillness into your day? A well rested body is a healthy body.

Cleansing allows you to become more mindful and present
Doing a cleanse allows you to adopt a great appreciation for the human body and all that is does on a daily basis. How it digests, moves, repairs and carries you to where you want to go. When you strip everything back you are able to become more embodied which urges you to treat the body with the respect it deserves. Instead of being disconnected from the body, rushing around and eating food on the run, cleansing allowed me to become more mindful and more present. As I was missing food I wanted to saviour every last sip of the juice. So I made sure I was sitting down and I took my time drinking the juice. I was really able to tap into certain sensations in the body and I was able to really taste the juice. The sweetness, the sharpness, the earthiness. How can you be more mindful and more present in your everyday life? Have your lunch away from your desk, turn the TV and phone off. Be present with your food and enjoy every mouthful. When you are present with your food, with no distractions, it allows for the body to enter the relaxation response and digestion and metabolism can work at an optimal state as you are only focussing on the task of eating and nothing else.


My advice to you if you are thinking of doing a cleanse:

Do a cleanse when you have time to relax
If you are thinking of doing a cleanse then choose to do one when you have time to relax and look after yourself. Not when you are working or rushing around. The whole reason to do a cleanse is to allow for your body to rest. When you create space in your day by slowing down you are able to really step into the body and take it to where you want it to go.

Know your “why” behind doing a cleanse 
Is it simply to loose weight or is it to have better energy or improve your digestion? Don’t let weight loss be the number one goal. A cleanse will not help you heal your relationship with food and will not help your struggle with weight in the long run. Do a cleanse if you are coming from a place of love and respect for your body. Don’t do a juice cleanse if it is just another way to punish and restrict yourself. This will only complicate your relationship with food further.

Take the time to listen to your body
Note down anything that comes up for you. Don’t just guzzle down the juices but tap into how your body feels when you drink it. Drink slow and mindfully. Use the cleanse as an experiment to really get to know your body and what role food plays in your life. Notice habits that may not be serving you and see how you can make the changes to break these habits to improve your health. Awareness is everything when it comes to change.

I really enjoyed my 3 day juice cleanse with Juci Wellbeing. A lot of lessons where learnt and habits bought to the surface that I’m going to work on moving forward post cleanse. Health is a journey and my journey still continues.
